Carrion Witch to Unleash New Album April 1, 2014
"Those of Whom I Speak", the much-anticipated full-length by Florida death/grind/doom duo Carrion Witch is set for an April 1st, 2014 release on Sun Serpent Records. Michael Thomas Morgan and Dave Couillou tell us how they possessed the mind of their inner hooded child, and what to expect on the follow up to 2012's "Vestal" EP.
"Basically, there are four groups of four songs," explains Dave. "Each group pertains to a specific member of the family from the cover. Is it a concept album? Well, there is no specific storyline, but it definitely paints a picture. There are also some musical and lyrical themes that run throughout different songs, tying them to one another in some way. So, I suppose one may call it a concept album."
"Every character is showcased," continues Michael. "And using the mind of each character as a surrogate, I could explore this family from their own theoretical point-of-view. And some of the things they showed me weren't very pretty."
What was your approach to this album?
Dave: "Finding a great riff, then finding another great riff to connect with that, and so on. By the time we finished making 'Vestal' there was such a progression and expansion to our songwriting that we felt there was no reason to put the breaks on for this album."
Mike: "I wanted to incorporate more than one vocal style. Low growls and high screams mixed together with some more discernible yelling and a couple of accented parts where it just sounds like wild animals caught in a trap."
And what do they see on the horizon for Carrion Witch?
Dave: "Writing songs, making records, playing shows."
Mike: "We are old so eating Ramen in a broken down van in the midwest isn't my plan. Opening up a fest however is something that is a dream."
Dave: "What he said."
Sonically, the album screams with grinding intensity one minute, chugs & grooves the next, then suddenly drops into a haunted abyss of doom, the capricious riffing reflecting the schizophrenic poetry of this curious family.
"Those of Whom I Speak" was written & recorded between March 2013 and February 2014 at Defiled Sound in Sarasota, Florida.
