20th Anniversary Re-Issue of Gutchugger Debut
After kicking off the 'Sun Serpent Re-issue Series' in 2011 with the re-release of their 1998 classic "Amputee", Gutchugger will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album this year by contributing to the next installment in the series.
Originally recorded in 1994, "Gutchugger" was a one man project from start to finish. The recordings were lo-fi and raw, however they captured an independent, unrefined charm. Xavier recollects, "It's hard to believe it's been twenty years since I first recorded the songs for that album. Recording the guitars in my living room, and the drums in the dining room. It was very raw, very loose."
By early 1997, while writing and preparing songs for "Amputee", Gutchugger joined Sun Serpent Records. Seeing the possibility of a re-release of their debut, Xavier, thinking the original 1994 recordings were sub-par, decided to re-record the entire first album again on his own in-between the writing sessions for the new album.
For the 20th Anniversary re-issue Xavier will personally remaster both recordings. "So, basically I have two complete recordings of the first Gutchugger album, one from 1994 and one from 1997," Xavier explains, "so instead of choosing between them, I've decided to release both in their remastered, lo-fi glory."
Asked about any bonus material for the remastered edition Xavier volunteered, "I plan to listen to the 'Unhealed Cuts' demos again, and perhaps a proper CD release of the 'Dominion' EP as well."
